A celebration shaped by place
Originally from Russia and now living in Japan, the bride works with communities across the country, supporting regional revitalisation projects.
Three years after their marriage, the couple came to me with a wish to create a meaningful celebration with their family before the groom left Japan for an overseas assignment.
They wanted something simple and private — a chance to step away from the noise of everyday life and spend uninterrupted time together as a family.
To escape the summer heat, we looked for somewhere surrounded by nature where they could slow down and truly relax.
The answer was Tateyama, Toyama.
Toyama was already a special place for the couple. They had travelled there to celebrate their fifth anniversary as a couple, making it particularly meaningful that, five years later, they return to the same region to celebrate their tenth anniversary with their family.
For two nights and three days, we planned an intimate wedding retreat in a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese house, creating a space where everyone could simply relax, reconnect and enjoy being together.
THE PLACE
Set among the mountains of Toyama, Tateyama offered exactly what the couple were looking for — fresh air, beautiful landscapes and a slower pace of life.
A beautiful Japanese traditional house with more than 130 years of history, became the heart of the celebration. The family stayed together under one roof, sharing meals, getting ready together and enjoying the surrounding nature.
For a couple who value travel, nature and local communities, it felt like the perfect setting for a celebration that was personal, unhurried and deeply connected to place.
THE EXPERIENCE
A morning together
The wedding day began quietly with breakfast shared by the whole family.
After getting ready, we took photographs around the traditional house, capturing the atmosphere of the morning and the small moments shared between family members.
Before heading out for the day, the family received handmade onigiri prepared by the local mothers.
With their rice balls in hand, everyone set off together for a short journey through the surrounding mountains.
The landscape became part of the experience, with photographs taken against the vast mountain scenery and the beautiful natural surroundings of Toyama.
A ceremony beneath the trees
The ceremony took place in a quiet forest close to the house. The bride and groom exchanged their vows surrounded by their family, with the bride's father officiating the ceremony.
And then, just as the ceremony began, the rain arrived. Rather than interrupting the moment, the rain seemed to make it even more meaningful.
The words spoken by the bride's father were filled with love and emotion. Standing beneath the trees as the rain gently fell, it was impossible not to feel that this was more than simply a change in the weather.
It felt almost as though the rain had arrived as a blessing — nature itself offering its own way of celebrating the couple.
Looking around at the gentle expressions on each family member's face, there was a quiet sense that everyone was sharing the same feeling.
Whatever challenges might come in the future, this family will face them together.
There was a strength and depth of love in that moment that was difficult to put into words.
An evening of sushi and togetherness
After the ceremony, everyone returned to the house for a relaxed dinner prepared by a travelling sushi chef. A full sushi course was served in the traditional house, giving the family time to unwind after the ceremony and simply enjoy one another's company.
The space was decorated with soft-toned flowers and delicate ribbons, carefully chosen to blend naturally with the surrounding forest and the character of the traditional Japanese house.
Nothing felt overly formal.
THOUGHTFUL DETAILS
Details that felt like them
Every element of the celebration was designed around the couple's wish for something intimate, natural and personal.
From the traditional house and its surrounding forest to the soft floral styling and relaxed atmosphere, we wanted the details to feel as though they belonged naturally within the landscape.
Rather than creating a highly produced wedding environment, the focus was on making the family feel comfortable and giving them space to enjoy the time they had together.
The result was a celebration that felt less like a formal event and more like a meaningful family gathering.
A TASTE OF THE REGION
A meal to remember
Food was an important part of the experience, bringing everyone back together after the ceremony.
The evening's dinner was prepared by a local sushi chef, allowing the family to enjoy a special full-course meal in the comfort of their traditional accommodation.
The following morning, they enjoyed breakfast freshly cooked rice prepared by the Okamisan, (inn's proprietress) in a traditional hagama iron pot.
These simple meals became part of the story of the stay — not just something to eat, but another way of experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the region.
MOMENTS WE REMEMBER
A new chapter beneath a clearing sky
The day after the ceremony, the weather completely changed.
The rain had disappeared, leaving behind clear skies and wonderfully fresh air — almost as if the landscape itself was reflecting the bright future ahead of the couple.
After breakfast, the family headed out for a cruise through a nearby gorge before relaxing in the hot springs.
It was a gentle ending to their time together in Toyama.
Five years after first visiting the region to celebrate their fifth anniversary, they had returned to mark another important milestone — this time with their family, celebrating ten years together.
BRINGING THEIR VISION TOGETHER
A celebration that was truly theirs
Love looks different for every couple.
And the way we choose to celebrate and preserve that love can be just as personal.
For these two, a meaningful wedding wasn't about a grand venue or a large gathering. It was about bringing their family together and creating time to simply be with one another.
From the mountain landscapes of Tateyama to the traditional house, the intimate forest ceremony and the meals shared together, every part of the celebration was created around what mattered to them.
It was a privilege to help turn their vision into something they could experience together — and hopefully remember for many years to come.
